Manitoba’s Appliance Recycling Program

At Mike’s, we repair a wide variety of appliances—dryers, stoves, fridges, freezers, and more. There are times, however, when appliances are beyond repair. You can’t just throw these appliances on the curb to be trashed—you need to dispose of them properly.

In this article, we’re going to explore Manitoba’s appliance recycling program—a program that will give you a rebate if you recycle a qualifying fridge or freezer:

Recycling a Fridge or Freezer With the Manitoba Appliance Recycling Program

When you recycle an eligible full-sized fridge or freezer through the Appliance Recycling Program, you’ll receive a $30 rebate per fridge or freezer (to a maximum of three per household). The fridge or freezer must be at least 20 years old and at least 10 cubic feet.

Your old appliances will be picked-up, free of charge, by PureSphera Recovery and Recycling. When they pick up your old fridge or freezer, they can also pick up other appliances you may want to recycle, including:

  • Your undersized fridge (bar fridges)
  • Your undersized freezer
  • A working dehumidifier
  • A window air conditioner

You won’t receive a rebate for the other old appliances you recycle, but the free pick-up is a huge boon. If you have multiple undersized freezers or fridges or several dehumidifiers and air conditioners for pick-up, be sure to let them know before pick-up so they have enough room.

The appliances must be residential—businesses aren’t eligible for this program.

Using this program, you’ll save money and ensure that your large appliances are recycled responsibly. The program is administered through Efficiency Manitoba. Participating is the environmentally responsible thing to do—improperly recycled fridges and freezers leave a massive carbon footprint.

Recycling Other Appliances

The Appliance Recycling Program doesn’t cover many of the large appliances you may use daily. If you’ve got a stove, a washer, a dryer, or another old appliance you want to dispose of, you’ll have to arrange to drop it off at a 4R Depot

You can donate old appliances in good condition. The City of Winnipeg recommends you donate these appliances to ReStore, a branch of Habitat for Humanity. Proceeds from ReStore sales go to Habitat for Humanity.

Old electronics—computers and the like—are sometimes considered appliances. These items can also be recycled at a 4R Depot, though they’ll be sorted into a different section of the depot.

The staff at the 4R Depots are incredibly helpful—they’ll tell you exactly where to go to dispose of your old appliances and electronics.

Repair Your Old Appliances—Call Mike

Recycle, reduce, reuse—and repair. Have an old working fridge that’s in need of repairs? You may be able to get years of use out of it for less than it would cost to buy a new fridge. Imagine a world where everyone repairs their old appliances—we’d significantly reduce the number of appliances that would need to be manufactured. That helps reduce waste—and leads to a greener world for everyone.

For appliance repair service in Winnipeg, the name to remember is Mike’s.
