How To Prepare For Your Dishwasher Installation

If your dishwasher hasn’t been working, chances are you are very much looking forward to the day your new appliance gets delivered. You’re tired of washing those dishes by hand and you’re ready to let your new dishwasher carry the load. How can you best ready your home for the installation of your new dishwasher?

Be prepared before the delivery shows up on your doorstep. Here are four expert tips to make sure your installation goes as smoothly as possible:

Check the Dimensions

Before you spend money on a new appliance, you need to make sure you are purchasing the appropriate size. Measure the size of the designated space or the size of your current dishwasher to find out if your new one will fit. There’s nothing worse than having the delivery people show up to install it only to find out that it doesn’t fit in your kitchen. Measure the width as well as the distance from underneath your countertop to the floor.

Purchase the Right Parts

Make sure you know what comes with your new dishwasher; some models don’t include everything necessary for installation. For example, some may be missing a water intake hose and a power cord. These items are often sold separately in a kit for just a few dollars. If you do not have the parts from a previous dishwasher, you’ll need to ensure that you purchase them before installation day. Otherwise, you won’t be able to get it up and running.

Locate Your Water Shut-Off Valve

Is there anything worse than having your dishwasher installed and finding out that you have water running everywhere? Make sure you know where your water shut-off valve is prior to the delivery and installation. It should be in good condition, with no corrosion that will prevent your installers from shutting it off when the time comes. If you aren’t sure where it is located in your home, it may be under the sink or tucked away in a closet.

Make Sure You Have an Electrical Outlet

During the installation, you will likely be asked to turn off the power to your kitchen. Make sure you know how to do so at your electrical panel. You also need to ensure that there is a 110-volt grounded outlet located underneath the counter. It should be accessible so that a five-foot cord can reach it. If you do not have an outlet, you will need to contact an electrician to install one as most building codes and insurance companies do not allow dishwashers to be hardwired.
