Solved: Why Your LG Dishwasher Won’t Start

As reliable as your LG dishwasher might be, starting problems can occur with every brand from time to time. What’s a common reason your LG dishwasher won’t start? The wrong setting, like Child Lock or Delayed Start, will prevent or delay the start of a wash cycle. Try these LG dishwasher troubleshooting tips when starting issues keep it from doing its job.

LG Dishwasher Won’t Start? Here’s How To Fix It.

When your LG dishwasher won’t start it can seem as though it’s washed its last dish. Fortunately, in most cases, simply closing the door properly or selecting the right setting can solve the problem. Here’s how to identify what’s going on and implement the right solution.

1. Dishwasher Power Supply Problem

If your LG dishwasher won’t turn on and the control panel doesn’t illuminate, it may not be receiving power. Without adequate electricity, a dishwasher won’t start or perform any other function.

Here’s how to troubleshoot power supply problems:

  • Inspect the power cord: Make sure it’s damage-free and completely plugged into a functioning outlet.
  • Check the switch: Most dishwashers are connected to a kitchen switch that must be on for it to receive power. Locate the switch, checking under the kitchen sink if necessary, and ensure it’s in the on position.
  • Reset tripped breakers: Check your home’s circuit breaker box and reset any tripped breakers that may have shut down power.

2. Door Latch Is Not Engaged

To start a wash cycle, the door must be completely closed and its latch engaged. Why won’t my LG dishwasher turn on until the latch engages? The latch prompts the door switch to initiate a wash cycle and prevents messy dishwasher leaks. When closing the door, make sure you give it a firm push to engage the latch. If your LG dishwasher won’t start even if the door is closed properly, the latch may be damaged and requires professional replacement.

3. Need to Adjust LG Dishwasher Settings

Is your LG dishwasher not working even if it has power and the door is closed properly? Check your control panel to make sure you selected a wash setting. A wash cycle won’t start unless you select a setting before pressing the Start button. If you find your dishwasher not drying dishes sufficiently also select an extra or heated dry option, if available.

Your control panel will also let you know if the wrong setting or an error code is preventing an immediate start.

The following LG dishwasher settings and alerts prohibit it from starting immediately:

  • Control Lock: Prevents changes from being made during a wash cycle by locking all control panel functions, including the Start button.
  • Delayed Start: Delays the start of a wash cycle to a preset later time
  • Error codes: Uses a series of numbers and/or letters to signify a problem, potentially preventing an immediate start.

Consult your LG user manual to determine how to disable specific functions on your model dishwasher and decipher an error code’s meaning. Lastly, your control panel may not respond properly if it’s exposed to excessive moisture. If one or more buttons on your control panel is unresponsive, it must be professionally replaced.

4. Insufficient Dishwasher Water Supply

In addition to consistent power, your dishwasher also needs an adequate water supply to start a wash cycle. If you don’t hear the dishwasher filling with water after a cycle is initiated, there may be a water supply issue.

Use these tips to check the water supply when your LG dishwasher won’t start:

  • Check the water valve: Make sure it’s in the on position so water can flow from your home supply.
  • Inspect the water line: Look for kinks or twists and gently straighten it to restore water flow.
  • Assess the water inlet valve: This valve is located on the water line, opening and closing to allow water to flow through the line from your home supply. If it’s damaged or stuck closed, water may not flow sufficiently or at all. A broken water inlet valve must be replaced by a professional service.

5. Broken LG Dishwasher Parts

If the above steps don’t fix the problem, an LG dishwasher not starting may have a broken part. A faulty door switch may not register when the door is closed and fail to prompt the start of a wash cycle. If the control board has failed, it won’t process starting commands or send voltage to the appropriate function. Lastly, a defective thermal fuse can blow and prevent the dishwasher from starting until it’s replaced. We recommend that a professional service assess these components and replace them if necessary.
